Is Russia expensive for foreigners? What residents actually pay

    Roster checked September 2026 · September 2026

Food, transport and services are cheap by Western European standards; housing in Moscow, electronics and anything imported are not. A single person outside Moscow lives comfortably on far less than in the EU, while a Moscow family with a rented flat lands much closer to European numbers than the supermarket videos suggest.

    Meet the storytellers

🇦🇺 Travelling with Russell · Moscow

Films the same shopping basket in a discount chain and a premium one and reads out both receipts — the clearest grocery comparison available.

🇬🇧 Englishman In Russia · Moscow

Walks an electronics hypermarket with the camera on the price labels, which is where sanctions actually show up.

🇺🇸 Wild Siberia · Slyudyanka, Lake Baikal

Shows the other end of the scale: land, a well and building materials four time zones from Moscow.

What to verify before you move here

    • A grocery basket, a metro ride, a haircut, a restaurant meal and a doctor's appointment cost less than in Western Europe, and the residents' footage is consistent on this across four years and several cities.
    • Outside Moscow and St Petersburg, housing is dramatically cheaper — which is why the most comfortable-looking foreigners on the roster are the ones who left the capital.

    A second opinion

    • That Russia is cheap in general. None of these creators pays a Russian salary out of a Russian income while supporting a family in Moscow, and that is the case where the arithmetic gets tight.
    • That prices will hold. Import channels, the rouble and the tariff on foreign goods all moved during 2025-2026; a receipt filmed last spring is history, not a forecast.

    Questions people actually ask

Can I use my Visa or Mastercard in Russia?

No. Cards issued outside Russia do not work in shops or ATMs. Residents use a Mir card from a Russian bank; visitors bring cash and exchange it.

How much does a month in Moscow cost a single foreigner?

Rent dominates everything else, so the honest answer is a range set by district rather than a single figure. Our cost-of-living guide breaks it down by line item.

Is it cheaper to live outside Moscow?

Substantially, for housing above all. The trade-off is distance from specialist medicine, international flights and English-speaking services.
